Our Story

More than a stage race. We wanted to create a life-changing experience.

Run Everest is a bucket list experience, that takes people into a mountain playground that’s unlike anywhere else on the planet. It’s a chance to embark on one of the world’s great journeys, surrounded by likeminded people that have a shared passion for adventure, endurance and testing their minds and bodies.

Run Everest has been created by passionate trail runner and highly experienced race director Majell Backhaussen, along with fellow mountain athlete and event manager Dave Byrne. Both have spent extensive time in Nepal, exploring the spectacular Himalayas and becoming immersed in the beautiful Nepalese culture. Working alongside Maj and Dave on Run Everest is the professional team from Take On Nepal. They are the real heart and soul of the operation. Take On Nepal is one of the leading trekking companies in the country, with a team of skilled guides and hard working porters that are amongst the most knowledgeable and practiced in Nepal. They bring far more than local knowledge to the event. There’s empathy, enthusiasm and warmth that helps keep everyone smiling, safe and totally engrossed in the Nepalese experience.

Members of the Run Everest team have competed in several of the biggest trail races in the world, including UTMB, Ultra-Trail Australia, Western States and stage races like Marathon des Sables. Every event has its own unique personality and in creating Run Everest we like to think that we’ve taken many of the great attributes from those races and combined them into one truly remarkable event. Parallel to a desire to create a lifechanging experience for participants, the Run Everest team also want to have a positive impact on the lives of local Nepalese people. As such, for every competitor in the event, one child will have the cost of their schooling covered for the year. This is being facilitated by the charity Friends of Himalayan Children. Also, profits from Run Everest will go towards the cost of training female mountain guides that will eventually be employed by Take On Nepal.
